The study will offer insights into the daily experiences of individuals with psychiatric disorders. It aims to assess the acceptability of new technology designed to quantify the mood, behaviour and activity of the brain, and aid new therapeutic research and development. The NeuLogiq neuroassessment platform from Cumulus will be leveraged in the BPD patient population for the first time. The goal is to capture data that offers a clearer understanding of the activity within the brain’s networks. The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford will carry out the study at Warneford Hospital, gathering frequent EEG and behavioural evaluations and remote metrics of mood and activity. The study targets young adults aged 18 to 35 years and aims to evaluate the Cumulus platform’s feasibility in this population to offer a dataset for in-depth analysis of brain activity and behaviour in BPD. 30 BPD subjects and 20 subjects who have not been diagnosed with mental health disorders will be recruited. Ingelheim, Germany, Oxford and Belfast, UK, April 29, 2025 – Boehringer Ingelheim, the University of Oxford, and Cumulus Neuroscience are joining forces to provide insights into the day-to-day experiences of people living with psychiatric disorders, and how these experiences relate to their brain activity. The first-of-its-kind study will use novel technology to quantify brain activity, mood, and behavior at home in people who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), an often neglected group of patients. The aims are to explore the acceptability of this technology in patients and gain quantitative, fine-grained, insights that could potentially guide the research and development of much-needed new therapies. Current clinical and lab-based assessments rely on retrospective recall of symptoms. They are thus limited by how accurately patients remember past events and only provide a snapshot in time of an individual’s clinical state. Moreover, self-reported questionnaires lack objectivity. This can lead to an incomplete or inaccurate picture of the overall experience of the individual and the failure of new medicines in clinical studies. This new study aims to change that. It will use Cumulus´ NeuLogiq® neuroassessment platform for the first time in people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. This platform enables the tracking of brain function over time, both in the clinic, and from the comfort of a study participant’s home. Participants use a tablet to perform gamified versions of established objective behavioral tasks, while wearing the NeuLogiq headset which records EEG (electroencephalogram) brain waves that are precisely time-synced to the tasks. For more information, visit www.oryzon.com About IadademstatIadademstat (ORY-1001) is a small oral molecule, which acts as a highly selective inhibitor of the epigenetic enzyme LSD1 and has a powerful differentiating effect in hematologic cancers (see Maes et al., Cancer Cell 2018 Mar 12; 33 (3): 495-511.e12.doi: 10.1016 / j.ccell.2018.02.002.). Vafidemstat has also been tested in a Phase II in severe Covid-19 patients (ESCAPE) assessing the capability of the drug to prevent ARDS, one of the most severe complications of the viral infection, where it showed significant anti-inflammatory effects in severe Covid-19 patients. Vafidemstat is currently advancing as a Phase III-ready asset in Borderline Personality disorder (BPD) following completion of the global, randomized, double blind Phase IIb PORTICO trial (final data presented at ECNP-2024). Following receipt of the minutes from the End-of-Phase II meeting with the FDA to discuss PORTICO’s results, the company announced plans to move forward with a Phase III PORTICO-2 trial in agitation/aggression in BPD (FDA submission planned in 1H2025).
