London: As the world moves toward personalised treatment approaches, cell and gene therapies (CGTs) are gaining significant traction across various indications, with sales projected to increase from $8.70 billion in 2024 to $76.03 billion by 2030. According to a recent report by data analytics firm GlobalData, the CGT market is set to expand at a CAGR of 44 per cent, driven by the anticipated launch of pipeline therapies developed by both large and small pharmaceutical companies. Key players in this space include GSK, AstraZeneca, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Shanghai Hexaell Biotech, and Pharmicell. “The growth in this market is expected to be fueled by the introduction of novel pipeline agents developed by a mix of both big and small pharma companies,” said Momna Ali, Healthcare Analyst, GlobalData. “Despite challenges such as a lack of specific targets, pricing concerns, and access barriers, the global CGT market will experience substantial growth, driven by widespread interest from both large and small pharmaceutical and biotech companies,” Ali added. While the market has traditionally focused on targeted segments such as blood cancers, solid tumors, and rare disorders, GlobalData anticipates that gastrointestinal (GI) disorders will drive the next wave of expansion, spurred by innovations from both major and emerging pharma companies. Currently, there are only two approved CGTs in the gastroenterology market: Takeda Pharmaceuticals’ Alofisel (darvadstrocel) and Anterogen’s Cupistem. However, the report highlights that Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) / Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MDSLD) has the highest number of CGTs in development, with 80 pipeline assets. Among them: 44 are antisense RNA interference (RNAi) oligonucleotides (ASOs), 15 are cell therapies, 14 are gene therapies and seven are gene-modified cell therapies With continued advancements and investment, CGTs are poised to play a transformative role in the future of medicine.
