The primary objective(s) of the study is to evaluate the impact of exposure to SC Peginterferon beta-1a or IM Interferon beta-1a before and during pregnancy on pregnancy outcome in female participants who had registered in the German Patient Support Program (PSP) and of whom a pregnancy report and pregnancy outcome report is available.
The secondary objectives of this study are applicable for a subpopulation of the above-mentioned population, i.e. for participants of whom data on a standardized questionnaire collected during a telephone interview is available.

A Phase I Clinical Trial of Repeated Dose Intrapleural Adenoviral-Mediated Interferon-beta (BG00001, Ad.hIFN-β for Pleural Malignancies

This Phase I study will evaluate the safety of two doses of BG00001 at different doses and intervals. Eligible subjects will have:
malignant pleural mesothelioma, or
pleural effusions who have progressed through at least one prior therapy or have refused therapy
BG00001 is given twice through a catheter in the pleural space.

A Phase I/II Study of Interferon-Beta Gene Transfer (Ad.hIFN-β) in the Treatment of Refractory Colorectal Carcinoma With Liver Metastases

This study will be conducted in subjects with refractory colorectal carcinoma with unresectable liver metastases. The purposes of the study are:
to evaluate the safety and any harmful effects of an intravenous injection of Ad.hIFN-β;
help determine whether the virus carrying the interferon-beta gene will enter the bloodstream and liver tumor cells and cause the cancer cells to die.

Vaginal health and quality of sexual life of postmenopausal women on hyaluronic acid and Biosaccharide Gum-1 vaginal gel.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy of daily vaginal gel containing hyaluronic acid (HA) and Biosaccharide Gum-1 (BG-1) on vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) and on sexual function and quality of life (QoL).MATERIALS AND METHODSOne hundred-four postmenopausal women with VVA were enrolled in the nonrandomized comparison cohort study. Of them, 50 women on HA/BG-1 participated in the study group and 54 women on lubricants/moisturizers on-demand as a control group. The primary endpoint was the efficacy of the vaginal gel on VVA evaluated by the Vaginal Health Index (VHI) score. Secondary endpoints included sexual behavior by the self-administered female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaire, and quality of life (QoL), by the Short Form-36 questionnaire (SF-36).RESULTSAll symptoms of AVV improved after 12 weeks of treatment in women on HA/BG-1. The VMI, although improved at the 12-week follow-up compared to baseline, it connoted a low estrogenic stimulation value. Sexual function improved significantly in women on HA/BG-1. Moreover, women reported a significant improvement in the somatic aspects of QoL. No benefits were obtained by the women in the control group.CONCLUSIONSTreatment with HA/BG-1 could have used in postmenopausal women who complain of vaginal dryness. The amelioration of VVA-related signs could improve sexual function and QoL.

Biocontrol potential of Apilactobacillus kunkeei EIR/BG-1 against infectious diseases in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.)

The significant reduction of honey bee colonies due to the various infectious agents highlights the need for the development of new alternatives and integrated management strategies to keep a hive strong and healthy. The main purpose of this study was to develop an environmentally and friendly microbial feed supplements to prevent honey bee mortality and keep the bee colony population healthy and productive. For this aim, Apilactobacillus kunkeei EIR/BG-1 isolated from honey bee gut microbiota was evaluated for its preventive role against American Foulbrood disease and nosemosis. To test the ability of the strain EIR/BG-1 for suppressing Paenibacillus larvae growth under in vitro conditions, the agar well diffusion method was used and viable cells of the strain EIR/BG-1 inhibited the growth of P. larvae with an efficient inhibition zone (24 ± 0.8 mm) similar to tetracycline antibiotic (30 µg). To determine the preventive role of the strain EIR/BG-1 on infection progression, its viable cells were applied against nosemosis in a laboratory experimental setting. Our results showed that prophylactic supplementation of Al. kunkeei EIR/BG-1 (10⁶ cfu/bee) significantly reduced the spore load (66 ± 6.1%). Besides, gene expression of antimicrobial peptides in gut tissue has been up-regulated and infected midgut epithelium integrity and peritrophic membrane production were improved. In conclusion, our findings suggest that prophylactic supplementation of Al. kunkeei EIR/BG-1 as a natural strategy may enhance the honey bee's response when challenged by pathogens. Field applications towards gaining a better understanding of its biocontrol role will be the main goal of our future researches.

Enzymatic Synthesis of α-Glucosyl-Baicalin through Transglucosylation via Cyclodextrin Glucanotransferase in Water.

Baicalin is a biologically active flavone glucuronide with poor water solubility that can be enhanced via glucosylation. In this study, the transglucosylation of baicalin was successfully achieved with CGTases from Thermoanaerobacter sp. and Bacillus macerans using α-cyclodextrin as a glucosyl donor. The synthesis of baicalin glucosides was optimized with CGTase from Thermoanaerobacter sp. Enzymatically modified baicalin derivatives were α-glucosylated with 1 to 17 glucose moieties. The two main glucosides were identified as Baicalein-7-O-α-D-Glucuronidyl-(1→4')-O-α-D-Glucopyranoside (BG₁) and Baicalein-7-O-α-D-Glucuronidyl-(1→4')-O-α-D-Maltoside (BG₂), thereby confirming recent findings reporting that glucuronyl groups are acceptors of this CGTase. Optimized conditions allowed for the attainment of yields above 85% (with a total glucoside content higher than 30 mM). BG₁ and BG₂ were purified via centrifugal partition chromatography after an enrichment through deglucosylation with amyloglucosidase. Transglucosylation increased the water solubility of BG₁ by a factor of 188 in comparison to that of baicalin (molar concentrations), while the same value for BG₂ was increased by a factor of 320. Finally, BG₁ and BG₂ were evaluated using antioxidant and anti-glycation assays. Both glucosides presented antioxidant and anti-glycation properties in the same order of magnitude as that of baicalin, thereby indicating their potential biological activity.
