Delving into the Latest Updates on Lithium Citrate with Synapse

The goal is to study the effect of lithium compared to cariprazine in patients with depression in a bipolar disease.
The main question it aims to answer is:
Difference in change between the two groups from baseline to after 8 weeks treatment on Hamilton Ratings Scale for Depression, 6-item version (HDS-6)
Participants will be randomized to treatment with either lithium or cariprazin.
Will meet for interview and ratings 4 times during study period.
In two meetings, there will be made blood samples and ECG. At one meeting also a Urine sample.
Will be contacted for telephone interviews at 6 occasions.

Lithium Citrate Triggered Macroscopic Superlubricity with Near-Zero Wear on an Amorphous Carbon Film.

An amorphous carbon (a-C) film shows substantial potential for friction and wear reduction. In this work, the robust superlubricity state with a coefficient of friction of 0.002 at the maximal pressure of 1.15 GPa was realized when lithium citrate (LC) was applied as the lubricating additive in ethylene glycol (EG) to lubricate the Si₃N₄/a-C friction pair based on the ball-on-plate friction test. The wear rate of the a-C film was 4.5 × 10^-10 mm³/N·m, which was reduced by 98.3% compared to that of the film lubricated with EG. Friction promoted the chemisorption of the LC molecules via the tribochemical reaction between the carboxylate radicals and the a-C film. The exposed lithium ions could adsorb water molecules to form a hydration layer, providing extremely low shear strength. Furthermore, the colloidal silica layer formed on the Si₃N₄ ball via the tribochemical reaction could reduce friction. It was difficult to destroy the formed tribochemical films under high contact pressure because they were robust, preventing the direct contact of the friction pair and resulting in the near-zero wear of the a-C film.

Meloidogyne enterolobii-induced Changes in Guava Root Exudates Are Associated With Root Rotting Caused by Neocosmospora falciformis

AbstractDespite the worldwide importance of disease complexes involving root-feeding nematodes and soilborne fungi, there have been few in-depth studies on how these organisms interact at the molecular level. Previous studies of guava decline have shown that root exudates from Meloidogyne enterolobii-parasitized guava plants (NP plants), but not from nematode-free plants (NF plants), enable the fungus Neocosmospora falciformis to rot guava roots, leading to plant death. To further characterize this interaction, NP and NF root exudates were lyophilized; extracted with distinct solvents; quantified regarding amino acids, soluble carbohydrates, sucrose, phenols, and alkaloids; and submitted to a bioassay to determine their ability to enable N. falciformis to rot the guava seedlings’ roots. NP root exudates were richer than NF root exudates in amino acids, carbohydrates, and sucrose. Only the fractions NP-03 and NP-04 enabled fungal root rotting. NP-03 was then sequentially fractionated through chromatographic silica columns. At each step, the main fractions were reassessed in bioassay. The final fraction that enabled fungal root rotting was submitted to analysis using high performance liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, and computational calculations, leading to the identification of 1,5-dinitrobiuret as the predominant substance. In conclusion, parasitism by M. enterolobii causes an enrichment of guava root exudates that likely favors microorganisms capable of producing 1,5-dinitrobiuret in the rhizosphere. The accumulation of biuret, a known phytotoxic substance, possibly hampers root physiology and the innate immunity of guava to N. falciformis.

Lithium salts: assessment of their chronic and acute toxicities to honey bees and their anti‐Varroa field efficacy

AbstractBACKGROUNDVarroa control is essential for the maintenance of healthy honey bee colonies. Overuse of acaricides has led to the evolution of resistance to those substances. Studies of the short‐term acaricidal effects and safety of various lithium (Li) salts recently have been reported. This study examined the long‐term in vitro and in vivo bee toxicities, short‐term motor toxicity to bees and long‐term anti‐Varroa field efficacy of several Li salts.RESULTSIn an in vitro chronic‐toxicity assay, lithium citrate (18.8 mm) was the most toxic of the examined salts, followed by lithium lactate (29.5 mm), and lithium formate (32.5 mm). In terms of acute locomotor toxicity to bees, all of the Li salts were well‐tolerated and none of the treatment groups differed from the negative control group. In an in vitro survival study, all of the Li treatments significantly reduced bee life spans by a factor of 1.8–7.2, as compared to the control. In terms of life expectancy, lithium citrate was the most toxic salt, with no significant differences noted between lithium formate and lithium lactate. In the bee‐mortality field study, none of the examined treatments differed from the negative control. Amitraz and lithium formate exhibited similar acaricide effects, which were significantly different from those observed for lithium lactate and the negative control.CONCLUSIONIn light of lithium formate's honey bee safety and efficacy as an acaricide, additional sublethal toxicity studies in brood, drones and queens, as well as tests aimed at the optimization of administration frequency are warranted. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
