This study is about efficacy and safety of the new drug formulation and compares it to the "old" formulation which are film-coated tablets.

Dried sludge reburning blended with calcium magnesium acetate addition in a fluidized bed combustor

The combustion and pollutant emission characteristics of the dried sludge in a fluidized bed combustor (FBC) were studied. The sludge reburning technology was employed for the first time in FBC. A scheme for using the dried sludge reburning blended with calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) to reduce pollutants simultaneously was also proposed, and the effect of the CMA addition was investigated. Results showed that fluidized bed reburning technology can be used to effectively treat the sewage sludge with lower calorific values. As the secondary fuel mass percentage increases, the unburned carbon content in fly ash and the CO emission increase, resulting in lower combustion efficiency. However, the de-NO ratio increases from 37.1% to 53.7%, and the de-SO₂ ratio only increased from 1.6% to 7.6% as the secondary fuel mass percentage increase from 10% of 25%. For dried sludge blended with CMA, the minimum emissions of SO₂ and NO significantly decrease to 254 mg/Nm³ and 70.9 mg/Nm³ at Ca/S ratio of 2, respectively. Results of main gaseous pollutant emissions from the sludge combustion in an FBC using different pollutant removal methods were compared under well-defined conditions. Fuel reburning blended with CMA addition has the smallest SO₂ and NO emissions.

Effect of calcium magnesium acetate on the forming property and fractal dimension of sludge pore structure during combustion

The changes in pore structure characteristics of sewage sludge particles under effect of calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) during combustion were investigated, the samples were characterized by N2 isothermal absorption method, and the data were used to analyze the fractal properties of the obtained samples. Results show that reaction time and the mole ratio of calcium to sulfur (Ca/S ratio) have notable impact on the pore structure and morphology of solid sample. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (SBET) of sample increases with Ca/S ratio, while significant decreases with reaction time. The fractal dimension D has the similar trend with that of SBET, indicating that the surface roughness of sludge increases under the effect of CMA adding, resulting in improved the sludge combustion and the desulfurization process.

To the Editor: We read with great interest the article by Sakaguchi et al.¹ on a cohort study of 142,555 hemodialysis patients investigating the relationship of serum magnesium (Mg) with mortality risk as well as the comment by Courivaud and Davenport.² The authors observed a J-shaped association of Mg serum levels and mortality.They argue that the increasing risk of cardiovascular disease-associated mortality in the highest Mg sextile might be attributable to some extent to parathyroid hormone (PTH) oversuppression.Courivaud and Davenport² therefore advise caution, as oversuppressing PTH by mild hypermagnesemia may lead to adynamic bone disease.Recently, we could demonstrate in vitro that PTH suppression by Mg is mainly observed when moderately low calcium (Ca) concentrations are present.³ Mean Ca levels of the Japanese patients were 9.3±0.9 mg/dL, and hence well in the normal range.Further, clin. data of the CALcium acetate MAGnesium carbonate (CALMAG) study and its post hoc evaluation⁴ revealed that mean serum Mg levels of 3.11 mg/dL (1.279 mmol/l) in the CaAc/MgCO₃ group were not paralleled by changes of PTH and/or bone turnover markers.The serum Mg levels found in that study were equivalent to the levels at the lower end of the highest sextile in the Japanese cohort.Even though we fully agree with the authors that prospective studies on Mg supplementation for investigating its influence on bone are highly needed to fully answer this question, we feel that a general relationship of increased serum Mg levels and adynamic bone disease is not supported by existing studies.
