Overview

PRIMARY: To assess the safety of nimodipine in the treatment of HIV-Associated Motor / Cognitive Complex (formerly AIDS dementia complex). To assess the systemic or central nervous system toxicities (e.g., rash, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, nausea, dyspnea, muscle pain or cramp, acne) of nimodipine.
SECONDARY: To assess the efficacy of nimodipine in stabilizing the progression of HIV-Associated Motor / Cognitive Complex by improvement in neuropsychological test performance, peripheral neuropathy, or other neurologic manifestations.
HIV-infected patients may develop a condition known as HIV-Associated Motor / Cognitive Complex (also known as AIDS dementia complex) that causes damage to the nervous system, particularly the brain and spinal cord. Evidence exists that nimodipine protects nerve cells in culture from injury by HIV. Although nimodipine has been used in patients with other neurological problems, its safety and effectiveness in halting the progression of HIV-Associated Motor / Cognitive Complex is not yet known.

Gastrointestinal microbleeding induced by aspirin [50-78-2] (62.5 mg/kg twice daily by gavage) was unaffected by coadministration of paracetamol [103-90-2] and aspirin at the same dosage.Daily fecal blood loss in dogs treated with paracetamol, aspirin, and paracetamol-aspirin were 0.40, 4.81, and 5.46 mL, resp.Paracetamol-aspirin combinations for human use may not provide, therefore, any advantage over aspirin alone.

Of 57 diverse organic acids screened for antiinflammatory activity in vitro 42 gave results equivalent to or greater than acetylsalicylic acid in the trinitrobenzaldehyde assay.In most instances comparable activity could not be demonstrated in vivo using the carrageenan foot edema method or the azovan blue-carrageenan pleural effusion method.α-5-Diphenyl-2H-tetrazole-2-acetic acid, m-[(α-phenylphenacyl)amino]benzoic acid, m-[3-(2,4-dioxo-1H,3H-quinazolinyl)]benzoic acid, 5,5'-selenobis salicylic acid, 3-octylsalicylic acid, N-acetyl-p-aminophenol are representative of the 42 acids with in vitro antiinflammatory effects.
