Novel chlorins (I; R = CH2OH, R1 = Me, R2 = OMe, R3 = OH (6); R = CH2CH2OH, R1 = Me, R2 = R3 = H (10); R = Me, R1 = Et, R2 = R3 = H (14)) with fused naphthalene ring were synthesized from octaalkyl-20-(2'-hydroxymethylphenyl)porphyrins via acid catalyzed cyclization. Metalation of naphthochlorin 10 with tin(IV) and indium(III) gave [SnCl2L] and [InClL] (H2L = 10). In vitro biol. evaluation of complexes 15 and 16 showed them to be potent photosensitizers in cell based assays demonstrating their potential use in photodynamic therapy.
