iStock, Deagreez While increases in the interest rate from the Federal Reserve are usually bad for biotech, the sector at this moment is poised to withstand the blow, according to analysts, though earlier stage companies may be left in the lurch. The Federal Reserve made a move yesterday that is universally considered bad for biotech —raising the federal funds rate by a quarter percentage point in the face of rapidly expanding economic activity. But the biotech sector was standing on strong footing heading into the rate hike, leaving analysts from BMO Capital Markets confident that the central bank’s move will not have the strong impact that previous interest rate increases have. Driving biotech is a return of M&A as larger pharmaceutical companies face loss of exclusivity for key assets and a need for differentiated assets from smaller companies, BMO wrote on Wednesday prior to the Fed’s action. “We believe this can persist, but higher rates should increase stock selection rather than automatically derail the sector,” the analyst said. An increase in the fed rate makes capital more expensive. Biotech is a capital-intensive industry that requires long bets before a payoff. August 5, 2026 · 7 min read · Annalee Armstrong Read more Indeed, when the Fed announced the rate decision at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the S&P Biotech ETX (XBI), a biotech exchange used as a measure of the sector’s performance, fell sharply. The fund has dropped over 3% in the past five days. But year to date, the XBI is up more than 26% and is sitting at $155 a share. “Recent XBI outperformance (+26% YTD) suggests investors are becoming increasingly comfortable with a higher-rate environment,” BMO wrote. “Rather than selling Biotech broadly as rates move higher, investors appear more willing to differentiate among companies based on clinical catalysts, balance-sheet strength, and strategic value,” the analysts continued. “This does not mean rates no longer matter, but it does suggest they are becoming less important than company-specific fundamentals and improving sector sentiment.” With the rate hike, BMO predicts that preference will continue to shift toward “well-capitalized companies with near-term clinical de-risking events.” As a result, deals and positive clinical momentum will need to continue if the sector is to thrive in the post-rate hike environment, the firm said. “Companies with attractive assets, sufficient capital, and clear catalysts should continue to perform well, while earlier-stage or less differentiated companies may struggle to maintain recent gains,” BMO added. Big Pharma is much more resilient to rate hikes, BMO noted. But the increase could still impact individual companies. The firm pointed to Pfizer as one example. “A meaningful part of the investment case for Pfizer is the company’s dividend yield, which becomes less attractive on a relative basis as investors can generate higher returns from lower-risk fixed-income alternatives,” BMO explained. Eli Lilly’s trillion-dollar valuation could also see pressure because it’s tied to long-dated growth, the analyst said. iStock, Nuthawut Somsuk With just over $10 million in cash available to fuel operations through the end of the year, Longeveron is undertaking a strategic review after the failure of a cardiovascular study. Longeveron’s investigational stem cell therapy failed to improve blood flow in the heart during a mid-stage study of a rare congenital heart disorder, prompting the Miami biotech to “review all options” to maximize value for shareholders. The biotech’s shares tumbled 57% to $2.86 in pre-market trading Thursday morning, despite the CEO’s assurance that the therapy laromestrocel will carry on in other indications—particularly longevity. The heart condition study will inform future development plans, CEO Stephen Willard said in a Wednesday statement . Longeveron evaluated laromestrocel in the Phase 2b ELPIS II study, which enrolled 40 infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare and critical congenital defect in which the left side of the heart is malformed or underdeveloped. HLHS disrupts normal blood flow through the heart, leading to difficulty breathing, a weak pulse and a bluish skin color. Patients typically require surgery soon after birth. About one in 3,846 infants in the U.S. are born with HLHS. In ELPIS II, participants were randomly assigned to receive a single dose of laromestrocel to the heart, administered during surgery, or undergo standard-of-care surgery alone. Results showed that the stem cell candidate failed to significantly improve right ventricular ejection fraction at 12 months as compared with controls, which was the trial’s primary endpoint. Longeveron however touted initial exploratory analyses, which found that over a 12-month period, none of the patients who were given laromestrocel died. In contrast, there was one death in the control group. The biotech also noted that one of 17 patients treated with the stem cell therapy needed transplantation over a follow-up window that lasted up to five years, as opposed to two out of 21 participants in the control arm. Major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, also occurred 31% less frequently in the laromestrocel group—a finding that was not statistically significant. As for safety, 94% of laromestrocel-treated patients developed treatment-emergent adverse events, versus 100% of control counterparts. The events were deemed serious in 65% of the patients in the stem cell group compared to 71% of the control arm. None of the side effects were deemed related to the study treatment by investigators. Longeveron did not report the adverse events that were observed. The biotech touts laromestrocel as a “pipeline in a product,” with studies underway in pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy, Alzheimer’s disease and age-related frailty. Left in a precarious spot by ELPIS II’s failure, Longeveron will conduct a strategic review with a goal of maximizing value for shareholders. As part of this effort, the biotech plans to “implement cash conservation measures to optimize cost containment,” the company said on Wednesday. BioSpace has reached out to Longeveron for more details on this savings push. As of June 30, Longeveron had $10.1 million in cash and equivalents, enough to keep the company going into the fourth quarter of this year, according to a Q2 report last month . The company intends to pursue additional funding opportunities to continue studying laromestrocel in longevity and age-related frailty, according to the release.

Several other locations and functions have also been going strong. Biopharma employment opportunities are increasing as the year progresses, based on BioSpace data. Job postings live on the BioSpace website rose 17% from January to August. That’s likely welcome news to those looking for work, especially the unemployed. Roughly 15,000 biopharma professionals could be affected by this year’s made or projected layoffs , including over 14,000 in the first six months, according to BioSpace tallies. The most employment opportunities have been in the usual U.S. locations and functions. Through the first eight months of 2026, the top two states for jobs live on BioSpace were Massachusetts and California, and the top two disciplines were science/R&D (research and development) and clinical. Those aren’t the only areas going strong, however. Top 10 states seeking talent During the first eight months of 2026, major biopharma hubs Massachusetts and California were the only states to top 5,000 jobs live on BioSpace , with Massachusetts nearly hitting 6,000. Still, New Jersey was only about 100 shy of the 5,000 mark, and Illinois was only a few hundred behind that tally. As to how the two heavy hitters compare to each other, Massachusetts had about 800 more jobs live than California. That wasn’t the case at this time last year. From January through August 2025, California led by a large margin, at 6,021 versus 4,970 for Massachusetts. The year-over-year place swap is due to jobs live on BioSpace for the first eight months of 2026 jumping 19% in Massachusetts and dipping 14% in California. Of the top 10 states from January to August 2026, seven had year-over-year jumps. The three largest increases were in Pennsylvania (+105%), Texas (+53%) and New Jersey (+49%). There were decreases in Indiana (-31%), California (-14%) and North Carolina (-9%). For job opportunities in the top 10 states, those posted now on BioSpace include: About 400 in Massachusetts at companies including Dyne Therapeutics, Moderna and Sanofi Around 800 in California at biopharmas such as Amgen, Eli Lilly and Syner-G BioPharma Group Over 300 in New Jersey at companies including Legend Biotech, Novo and Tris Pharma More than 300 in Illinois at biopharmas such as AbbVie, CSL and Lundbeck Over 200 in Indiana at companies including Amgen, Eli Lilly and Novo About 300 in New York at biopharmas such as Protara Therapeutics, Recursion and Regeneron Around 150 in North Carolina at companies including Eli Lilly, GRAIL and Novo Over 50 in Texas at biopharmas such as Amgen, Eagle Analytical and Regeneron About 100 in Pennsylvania at companies including Legend Biotech, Ocugen and Sanofi Around 100 in Maryland at biopharmas such as Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, Syngene International and United States Pharmacopeia Additional states with significant opportunities include Florida and Ohio . Disciplines with the highest demand During the first eight months of this year, science/R&D and clinical were the only disciplines to top 10,000 jobs live on BioSpace . Science/R&D grabbed the No. 1 spot, edging out clinical by about 4,500. However, manufacturing and production and information technology were also strong, at 9,282 and 8,073 jobs live, respectively. Eight of the 10 disciplines grew year over year. The two largest increases were in information technology (+32%) and sales and service (+26). Science/R&D and clinical ranked third (+26% each). Information technology may be seeing a bump due to the growing need for people who can apply data insights throughout a drug’s life cycle. The sales and service increase may be tied to more companies needing commercial roles to support commercialization efforts. That need isn’t only at pharmas. Graig Suvannavejh, managing director and senior biotech and biopharma analyst at Mizuho Securities, recently told BioSpace there is an explosion in new product launches by biotech companies. Year-over-year decreases among the 10 disciplines were in quality (-17%) and administration (-4%). Science/R&D was the most in-demand discipline among the top 10 states for jobs live on BioSpace . It ranked first for almost every location. The only exceptions were North Carolina and Texas. In North Carolina, manufacturing and production took the top spot, reflecting the state’s strong reputation for biopharma manufacturing. In Texas, where the Texas Economic Development Corporation touts the biotech and life sciences industry as extending across areas including commercialization, sales and service was No. 1. The clinical discipline ranked second in five states and landed in the top five in all 10 states. Manufacturing and production and information technology were also functions in high demand overall. The former landed in the top five for every state, while the latter was in the top five in nine states. Layoff numbers exclude contract development and manufacturing organizations, contract research organizations, tools and services businesses and medical device firms. To tally the cuts,  BioSpace  compiles data for known workforce reductions. The number of employees affected is identified or estimated through confirmation from company officials as well as information in company press releases,  Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act  notices, SEC filings and other media outlets’ reports. Not all companies disclose downsizing, and some share only the percentage of staff affected.
