A review.Though Zinc Oxide (ZnO) has a superior deodorant potential, it has not been used as a popular ingredient for deodorant products.Low popularity of ZnO for deodorant field might be attributed to its properties, such as poor spreadability resulting in white marks on the skin, and undesired tactile sensation. As these attributes are not preferable specially when incorporating ZnO into powder spray type products, we modified ZnO with cellulose bead and powder and obtained ZnO-cellulose complex suitable for powder sprays. We found that the complex has much less undesired properties mentioned above, maintaining as same deodorant potential as ZnO.As for deodorant efficacy of the complex, two clin. trials showed us that the formula comprising ZnO-cellulose complex had both outstanding immediate and long-lasting deodorant effect. As the electron microscopic of the complex depicts that the complex is constructed with primary and secondary particle, we assume that the secondary particle might easily untied into primary particle when it encounters aqueous substances such as sweat, by which the surface area of the complex becomes much larger. This change in the complex structure seems to be the mode of action behind the long-lasting deodorant effect of the complex.
