The number of patients with lower extremity varicose veins has been increasing due to an aging population, with treatments divided into conservative and invasive methods. Current treatments can be expensive and inaccessible for some patients. Entelon, a relatively inexpensive intravenous drug, has shown promise in improving symptoms related to venous lymphatic dysfunction, but its objective vascular function improvement hasn't been proven. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Vitis Vinifera seed extract (Entelon®) combined with lifestyle therapy in patients with varicose veins, using follow-up Doppler ultrasonography to measure venous reflux improvement.

A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-blind Non-inferiority Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of Entelon® as Compared to Doxium Tab. And Placebo for the Treatment of Nonproliferative Diabetic Retinopathy

This was a multicentre, randomised, double-blind controlled study that compared the efficacy and safety of V. vinifera extract, calcium dobesilate (CD), and placebo in subjects with DME. Patients made 6 clinic visits, namely the screening visit; baseline visit (T0); and follow-up visits at 3 (T3), 6 (T6), 9 (T9), and 12 (T12) months.

Cross-sectional analysis for lymphedema epidemiology in South Korea by HIRA data: An observational study

Lymphedema is known to affect as many as 140 to 250 million people worldwide. Approximately 99% of lymphedemas are secondary cases after lymphadenectomy, radiation, or parasite infection. There has been no accurate estimate of the lymphedema population size in South Korea. This study aimed to quantify the epidemiology of lymphedema in South Korea and analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with lymphedema using a nationwide database. This large-scale cross-sectional study included patients who received one of the following three diagnostic codes – Q82.0 (hereditary lymphedema), I97.2 (breast cancer-related lymphedema), and I89.0 (unclassified lymphedema) from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment service between January 2019 and July 2022 at tertiary hospitals, general hospitals, or other hospitals. The demographics of the lymphedema population, medication use, and medical characteristics were identified. Over the last 4 years, the annual incidence of lymphedema has steadily increased and peaked in 2021 with the number 1.85 out of 1000. Of all patients, 81% were located in the upper extremity, and 10.6% had previous cancer. Most patients were diagnosed in general hospitals (53.2%), at orthopedic surgery department (41.9%). On average, lymphedema patients spent 70.17 US dollar for medication and hospitalized for 16.9 days annually after diagnosis. Commonly prescribed medications were Entelon® (Vitis vinifera seed extract) (66.9%), steroids (40.5%), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (26.5%) and diuretics (21.8%). Only 5.7% of patients received surgery and 19.2% received herbal medicine. This is the first study in South Korea to quantify demographic and medical characteristics of lymphedema patients. These results will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of lymphedema diagnosis and treatment in our nation.

AIMPsoriasis is a systemic inflammatory immune-mediated skin disease. Recently a relationship with metabolic syndrome in terms of psoriasis severity and response to therapy was observed.METHODSWe performed an open-label randomized controlled study to evaluate the role of a nutraceutical containing Q10 coenzyme, Krill-oil, lipoic acid, resveratrol, Vitis vinifera seed oil, vitamin E and selenium in addition to etanercept therapy for patients affected by psoriasis and metabolic syndrome. Forty patients were enrolled and divided into two arms, one receiving only etanercept, one other receiving also the neutraceutical. After a period of 3 months (T1) a second evaluation of the considered parameters was performed.RESULTSAt T1 statistically significant differences were detected in HDL cholesterol and triglycerides values both comparing the two arms and in the nutraceutical arm.CONCLUSIONOur results show that the dietary addiction of the nutraceutical to the etanercept therapy in patients affected by both psoriasis and metabolic syndrome could help to restore the normal lipid profile.

Interleukin-1 (IL1) is a proinflammatory cytokine and promotes cancer cell proliferation and invasiveness in a diversity of cancers, such as breast and colon cancer. Here, we focused on the pharmacological effect of Entelon® (ETL) on the tumorigenesis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells by IL1-alpha (IL1A). IL1A enhanced the cell growth and invasiveness of TNBC cells. We observed that abnormal IL1A induction is related with the poor prognosis of TNBC patients. IL1A also increased a variety of chemokines such as CCL2 and IL8. Interestingly, IL1A expression was reduced by the ETL treatment. Here, we found that ETL significantly decreased the MEK/ERK signaling pathway in TNBC cells. IL1A expression was reduced by UO126. Lastly, we studied the effect of ETL on the metastatic potential of TNBC cells. Our results showed that ETL significantly reduced the lung metastasis of TNBC cells. Our results showed that IL1A expression was regulated by the MEK/ERK- and PI3K/AKT-dependent pathway. Taken together, ETL inhibited the MEK/ERK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and suppressing the lung metastasis of TNBC cells through downregulation of IL1A. Therefore, we propose the possibility of ETL as an effective adjuvant for treating TNBC.
