BACKGROUND AND PURPOSEAromatherapy, a non-pharmacological intervention involving essential oils, has been suggested as a complementary therapy for perioperative discomfort. This study seeks to systematically examine the efficacy of aromatherapy in alleviating pain and other discomforts in mothers undergoing cesarean sections.METHODSA systematic search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase was conducted from inception to September 2024. Inclusion criteria involved mothers undergoing cesarean section, aromatherapy as an intervention, and outcomes such as pain, anxiety, nausea and vomiting. Subgroup analyses explored the effects of distinct control groups, essential oil, dosage, number of sessions, and session length of aroma preparations. Statistical analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3, with heterogeneity assessed using the Q test and I² statistic.RESULTSSeventeen studies involving 1490 participants were included. Aromatherapy significantly reduced post-cesarean pain (SMD = -1.19, 95 % CI [-1.93, -0.45], p = 0.002). Chamomile oil, low dosage (≤2 drops), single session and sessions lasting 20 min or less were more effective in relieving pain. Aromatherapy significantly decreased nausea incidence (RR = 0.52, 95 % CI [0.33, 0.81], p = 0.004), reduced analgesic requirements (RR = 0.60, 95 % CI [0.49, 0.73], p < 0.00001), and improved patient satisfaction (RR = 1.64, 95 % CI [1.26, 2.12], p = 0.0002).CONCLUSIONAromatherapy effectively reduces post-cesarean pain, nausea, analgesic use, and improves patient satisfaction. Chamomile oil, low doses (≤2 drops), single session and short length (≤20 min) seems to be the most effective method for alleviating post-cesarean pain.

The Effects of Chamomile and Flaxseed on Pelvic Pain, Dyspareunia, and Dysmenorrhea in Endometriosis: A Controlled Randomized Clinical Trial

Background:Chamomile and flaxseed are traditionally used medicinal plants to treat painful menstruation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of chamomile and flaxseed on pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and dysmenorrhea in endometriosis patients.Materials and Methods:A controlled randomized clinical trial was conducted on 102 endometriosis patients referred to Reyhane Infertility Center of Qom University of Medical Sciences, Iran, from July 2021 to March 2022. Patients were divided into three groups: chamomile, flaxseed, and placebo, using the block randomization method. Patients used 1000 mg capsules (three times a day) for 8 weeks. A Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to measure the severity of pain. Pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and dysmenorrhea were assessed on three occasions Data were analyzed using the Chi-square, repeated measures ANCOVA, and ANOVA. All statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20.Results:Before the intervention, there was no significant difference between the three groups regarding dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, or dyspareunia (p > 0.05). The mean score of pelvic pain (on one and two-month follow-ups) in the chamomile and flaxseed groups (F = 383.07, p < 0.001) was lower than that in the placebo group. The mean score of dyspareunia (on one and two-month follow-ups) in the chamomile and flaxseed groups was significantly lower than that in the placebo group (F2 = 479.34, p < 0.001). The mean score of dysmenorrhea on one and two-month follow-ups (F2 = 385.67, p < 0.001) in the chamomile and flaxseed groups was lower than that in the placebo group.Conclusions:Chamomile and flaxseed may reduce pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and dysmenorrhea associated with endometriosis.

Optimization of the Cold Water Extraction Method for High-Value Bioactive Compounds from Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) Flower Heads Through Chemometrics.

This study focused on optimizing a cold water extraction method to obtain bioactive compounds from chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), addressing increasing consumer demand for natural products and nutraceuticals. A full-factorial design was employed to evaluate the effects of temperature, time, and chamomile amount on the polyphenolic profile of extracts. The samples were characterized by HPLC-DAD and UV-Vis coupled with chemometrics; the analysis showed that extraction time negatively affected extract quality, as did the interaction between time and temperature. In addition, a significant positive quadratic effect for temperature and a positive coefficient for chamomile amount was found. ASCA was used to assess the UV-Vis profile, offering an alternative untargeted method for understanding the variable effects. The optimal extraction conditions (25 °C, 32 min, and 2.5 g of chamomile) produced samples high in hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids and flavanol derivatives. Using A face-centered design, this study also monitored antioxidant activity via a DPPH scavenging assay, confirming that the optimal conditions yielded samples within the range of maximum antioxidant activity in the studied experimental domain.
