AstraZeneca doubles down on COPD awareness efforts during national awareness month

More than half of people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the US are undiagnosed. It’s not a brand new problem, but it’s one AstraZeneca is shining a light on with marketing and awareness efforts during November’s National COPD Awareness Month.

AZ physician, spokesperson and leading pulmonologist MeiLan Han is lending her expertise to its effort and speaking out about the challenges and stigma of COPD.
On her list of issues is the lack of funding for research, too few new drugs and a common patient problem around access to care.
“The needs for patients with COPD are huge,” she said. “We haven’t had a lot of new treatments developed in the past 10 to 20 years when compared to other chronic diseases like heart disease or diabetes or even cancer,” she said.
One of her goals this year is make people better aware that lung health of many people is more vulnerable than previously realized. The Covid-19 pandemic changed her own thinking in understanding that as so many people suffered more severe illness because of pre-existing lung damage they didn’t know about.
“The message has to be, in part, that people need to start paying a lot more attention to both the quality of the air they breathe and their own risk factors – and then they need to also start being better advocates for themselves with their doctors and pushing to get lung function testing done,” she said.
Among AZ’s efforts is an education effort and website, “Listen to Your Lungs,” another website, “Speak Up for COPD,” with patient stories aimed at policymakers and the industry, and a patients’ guide to communicating with their doctors on the AZ&You blog.
Later this week, AZ is planning to post COPD awareness month messages on its social media channels.
Also speaking out is an AZ patient expert named Tracy. Tracy was diagnosed eight years ago with stage four COPD. She admits that she knew something was wrong, but delayed going to the doctor because she “just didn’t want to hear the words.”
Tracy is encouraging others to get informed about COPD and advocate for themselves when it comes to trying new medicines or just learning about exercising or pulmonary rehab that could help.
AZ’s COPD efforts are unbranded, but its drug portfolio includes COPD treatments Symbicort and Bevespi Aerosphere, and the dual-combination of both along with three-in-one med Breztri Aerosphere.
