Oxy-fuel technologies for boosting and 100% conversions of cross fired furnaces

A review. Oxy-boosting technologies for two categories of cross-fired furnaces: volatile (borosilicate) and non-volatile (soda-lime-silica and TV panel glasses) are considered. Many borosilicate glass tanks have converted to 100% oxy-fuel. Case studies demonstrate the benefits of increased tonnage and lowered energy demand and NO_x emissions using a staged, flat flame burner technol. The decision to convert to oxy-fuel for other glass types typically is made on a case by case basis. It is shown through a set of case studies in an appendix that BOC's CGM advanced melting system can increase tonnage and quality on both oxy-boosted and 100% oxy-fuel furnaces.

Optimising nano-carbide precipitation in tool steels

It is well known that the wear resistance of tools can be improved using deep cold treatment to produce nucleation sites for the nano-sized carbides that form in the martensite during low temperature tempering following the extended treatment times. However, inconsistencies in the processing techniques used, particularly the soaking time at very low temperature and the steel's previous thermal history, have led to different conclusions as to the exact mechanisms involved. This paper reviews current thinking and attempts to explain the different results obtained in terms of the processing parameters and to elucidate the implications for the practical application of the technique to obtain optimum properties. An optimized process route using liquid nitrogen as the coolant is recommended and a possible technique to make further improvements in the process is suggested.

NEW YORK, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delcath Systems, Inc. today announced the appointment of Roger G. Stoll, Ph.D. to Delcath's Board of Directors. Dr. Stoll is Executive Chairman of Cortex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. , a biotechnology company specializing in the treatment of central nervous system disorders. (Logo: ) Prior to joining Cortex, Dr. Stoll worked as a consultant to several east coast venture capital firms and startup venture companies. From 1998 to 2001, Dr. Stoll was Executive Vice-President of Fresenius Medical Care - North America, a leading manufacturer and distributor of dialysis products, including hemodialysis machines and filters, and operator of more than 1,500 outpatient dialysis clinics in the United States. From 1991 to 1998, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Ohmeda, a global pharmaceutical and medical products business. Dr. Stoll was a member of the Board of Directors of the BOC Group, Plc, the parent company of Ohmeda, and also served on the Board of directors of St. Jude Medical. From 1986 to 1991, Dr. Stoll held several executive management positions at Bayer, AG including Executive Vice President and General Manager for the worldwide Diagnostic Business Group. Prior to that, Dr. Stoll worked for American Hospital Supply Corp., where he rose from Director of Clinical Pharmacology to President of the American Critical Care Division.
