Objective: To analyze sulfur dioxide residues in com. Chinese prepared drug in pieces, in order to provide references for further development and improvement of circulation management specification of Chinese prepared drug in pieces. Methods: According to the method of measuring sulfur dioxide residues of introduced in Chinese Pharmacopoeia (supplementary I, 2010 edition), 19 types of Chinese prepared drug in pieces (platycodon grandiflorum, north straight ladybell, Chinese angelica, polygala, fritillaria, cortex dictamni, chrysanthemum, honeysuckle, pinellia tuber, yam, radix asparagi, radix trichosanthis, rhizoma gastrodiae, two tooth achyranthes root, rhizoma bletillae, atractylodis, radix paeoniae alba, dangshen and radix Puerariae thomsonii) provided by our company in the local area and some other manufacturers of Chinese prepared drug in pieces during 2010-2013 were tested. Results: In the 19 types including 136 batches of Chinese prepared drug in pieces, sulfur dioxide was not detected in 12 batches, accounting for 8.8% of the total; sulfur dioxide content was below the limits of its corresponding standard in 30 batches, 22.1% of the total; sulfur dioxide content was beyond the current recommended limits in 94 batches, 69.1% of the total. The maximum residue was seen in flower, being 2651 mg·kg-1.Conclusion: More than 91% of the 19 types of Chinese prepared drug in pieces such as Dangshen, chrysanthemum, honeysuckles in the market at present have sulfur dioxide residues at different degrees, among them, the residue content in the 7 types, i.e., dangshen, Chinese angelica, radix trichosanthis, rhizoma gastrodiae, north straight ladybell, chrysanthemum, honeysuckle, is too high, to which attention should be paid.
