An allele is one of two or more versions of a gene that are found at the same location on a chromosome. Alleles can result in different traits, such as variations in eye color, hair color, and other characteristics. Each individual inherits two alleles for each gene, one from each parent. These alleles may be the same (homozygous) or different (heterozygous). The presence of different alleles for a gene is a major source of genetic variation within populations.
