Sulfamethoxazole was first approved in 1965 by FDA , it was first marketed by Roche and sold under the trade name Gantanol® in the US. Sulfamethoxazole is used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and prostatitis. The drug works by binding to the dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), an enzyme involved in bacterial folic acid synthesis. Sulfamethoxazole is known to cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting) and allergic skin reactions. It is now mostly used in combination with trimethoprim and as a first-choice treatment for urinary tract infections.
