Functional Profiling of the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Niche in Graft Versus Host Disease Mediated Bone Marrow Insufficiency

The objective is to measure the frequency, functionality and phenotype of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Furthermore, the immune cell infiltrate of the bone marrow will be monitored at the same time. These results will be correlated with the extent of cytopenia and clinical graft-versus-host disease grading.

A Multi-Center, Double-blind, Randomized, Placebo Controlled, Parallel Group Study of the Effect of Dalcetrapib on Atherosclerotic Disease Progression As Measured by Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound, Carotid B-Mode Ultrasound and Coronary Angiography

This multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study will evaluate the effect of dalcetrapib 600 mg on artherosclerotic disease progression, lipid profile and biomarker profile and long-term safety profile of dalcetrapib in patients with coronary artery disease. Atherosclerotic disease progression will be measured 1. Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), Quantitative Coronary Angiography 2. Carotid B-Mode Ultrasound Intima Medial Thickness (IMT) and total plaque volume in subjects undergoing coronary angiography who have coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients will be randomized to receive dalcetrapib 600 mg orally once a day or placebo. The anticipated time on study treatment will be 24 months. The target sample size is 800-1000 patients.

BACKGROUNDMorgellons disease is a rare controversial illness in individuals which is characterized by having a fixed, false belief (delusion) in which they are infested by non-living organisms, despite medical evidence which proves the contrary. The symptoms can appear solely in the oral cavity, a condition that had not previously been described in the dental literature. The underlying mechanisms behind these findings remain unclear, moreover, established diagnostic criteria or effective treatments were unsuccessful. This case report highlights the sensations of feeling hair and threads between the teeth of patients with Morgellons disease, as well as an unusual perception of the tongue and saliva were self-reported. Conventional medical treatments have not been effective in alleviating those oral symptoms. Taking into account the scarcity of cases in dental literature, the article underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches, in order to enhance diagnosis and treatment by integrating oral and mental health care.

Patients with Morgellons disease have a lower quality of life than patients with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and prurigo nodularis

Morgellons disease (MD) greatly affects a patient’s quality of life (QoL). Therefore, we aimed to measure the disease burden of MD on QoL and compare it with well-funded dermatological conditions, including prurigo nodularis (PN), atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis. This qualitative cross-sectional survey, comprising Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and 5-D itch scale questionnaires, was distributed to patients with untreated MD seen at the Oregon Health and Science University Dermatology clinic from July 2022 to July 2023. When comparing mean scores across dermatological conditions, MD had significantly higher DLQI scores than PN, AD and psoriasis, and significantly higher PSQI scores than AD and psoriasis.
