This is a 4-week pilot, multicenter, randomized, double-blinded placebo controlled trial of hydroxocobalamin and butyrate in ulcerative colitis (UC) that will occur in two phases. The main objectives of this study are to determine the capacity of hydroxocobalamin and butyrate to reduce calprotectin in those with inflammatory disease in UC to determine the safety and preferential dose of hydroxocobalamin with butyrate in UC.

Pharmacological Treatment on the Recovery of Neurosensory Disturbance After Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy: a Randomized, Double-blind Trial

The bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) of the mandible is one of the most used surgical techniques to achieve a harmonious jaw relation in the context of orthognathic surgery. Nevertheless, one of its main complications is neurosensory damage to the inferior alveolar nerve, which can cause severe impact in the quality of life on patients who suffer from it permanently. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to provide rigorous scientific evidence of the pharmacological effect of 1) Melatonin, 2) combination uridine triphosphate (UTP), cytidine monophosphate (CMP), and hydroxycobalamin (UTP/CMP/hydroxycobalamin) and 3) hydroxycobalamin regarding neurosensory disturbances incidence and persistence after BSSO.

Acute cyanide intoxication due to apricot seed ingestion

Introduction: Cyanide poisoning, whether it be accidental or intentional, remains a significant danger to adults and children, especially in societies where agriculture is a primary source of income. We examined the clinical follow-up, complications, and results of cyanide poisoning cases that occurred after eating the pits and seeds of plants containing cyanide glycosides, such as apricot kernels and almonds. Methods: Between 01/01/2017 and 01/08/2022, 14 children aged 1-18 years who were followed up with a prediagnosis of cyanide poisoning in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) were retrospectively analysed. Results: Eight of the patients followed with a preliminary diagnosis of cyanide poisoning were female and six were male. The most common admission month was July (42.8%) coinciding with the agricultural season. The most common symptoms at presentation were weakness and fatigue (n = 7). In the PICU, 4 patients presented lip cyanosis; 3, altered level of consciousness. Vomiting, seizure, headache, dizziness and palpitatons were less frequent. Four patients were treated with hydroxocobalamin (Cyanokit®) as an antidote due to acidosis in their blood gases. All patients treated for cyanide poisoning were discharged. Conclusions: Cyanide poisoning should be considered in paediatric patients with suspicious findings, sudden loss of consciousness, increased anion gap acidosis and lactic acidosis. The history of eating the seeds of plants such as apricot and almonds should be investigated.

Membrane photobioreactor for biogas capture and conversion – Enhanced microbial interaction in biofilm

The urgency to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions has driven interest in sustainable biogas utilization. This study investigates a 1 L enclosed membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) using a microalgae-methanotroph coculture for biogas capture. Operating with a hydraulic and solid retention time of 7 days and a biogas loading rate of 2.7 L /day, the introduction of gas membrane module increased CO₂-C and CH₄-C uptake rates by 12 % and 50 %, respectively. Biofilm formation on the membrane surface enhanced system performance, with imaging analyses revealing methanotroph predominantly located near the membrane surface and photosynthetic microorganisms distributed throughout. Metagenomic analysis showed shifts in key metabolic pathways, including increased abundance of soluble methane monooxygenase genes and enhanced vitamin B synthesis in the biofilm. These findings highlight the spatial organization and metabolic interactions in methanotroph-microalgae coculture system, providing insights into the role of membrane-induced biofilms in improving MPBR performance for sustainable biogas utilization.

Impact of fermentation by Saccharomyces Cerevisiae on the macronutrient and in vitro digestion characteristics of Chinese noodles

This study examined the impact of live bread yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on the nutritional characteristics of Asian dried noodles. Micronutrient analysis of fermented noodles revealed a 6.9% increase in the overall amino acid content, a 37.1% increase in the vitamin B content and a 63.0% decrease in the phytic acid level. Molecular weight analysis of starch and protein contents revealed moderate decrease in the fermented noodles. The in vitro digestion of fermented noodles showed a slightly faster initial acidification, four-fold decrease in the initial shear viscosity (from 8.85 to 1.94 Pa·s). The initial large food particle count (>2 mm diameter) was 19.5% lower in the fermented noodles. The fermented noodles contained slightly higher free sugar content (73.5 mg g^-1 noodle) during the gastric digestion phase. The overall nutrition and digestion results indicate nutritional improvement and digestion-easing attributes in the fermented noodles.
