29.3% of bacteremias in intensive care units (ICU) are linked to vascular devices, including 7.7% to arterial catheters, with an influence on both morbility and mortality.
It is now accepted that biofilm as a role on bacterial development on inner surface of vascular devices but there is yet a lack of clinical relevant data documenting a causal relation between biofilm formation and bacteremias.
The investigators assume that a better structural and microbiological characterization of arterial catheter biofilm in ICU patients could help preventing bacteremias or have a more specific treatment when it appears.

Unusual Verrucous Skin Lesion in Diabetic Neuropathy Following Toe Amputation and Skin Grafting.

Verrucous skin lesions in diabetic neuropathy (VSLDN) are rare and typically occur at weight-bearing sites due to chronic mechanical stress. This case report describes a 35-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed a verrucous lesion on the dorsum of his left foot following toe amputation and skin grafting. Histological analysis identified pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia with no evidence of malignancy or human papillomavirus infection. The lesion gradually resolved with the application of maxacalcitol ointment and the use of elastic stockings. This case highlights the importance of recognizing atypical verrucous lesions in patients with diabetes, particularly at non-weight-bearing sites after surgical interventions. Accurate differentiation between plantar warts and verrucous carcinomas is essential for appropriate management. Effective treatment and comprehensive patient education on foot care are crucial for improving outcomes and preventing further complications in patients with diabetes.

The Computational Interaction Analyses of Some Vitamin D-Related Compounds with Sterol 14-Demethylase (CYP51) – Could It Be a Glimmer of Hope to Find New Anti-Mucormycotic Drugs Extracted from Plants-Derived Sterols?

Introduction Many vitamin D analogs and sterols-related compounds have been identified and extracted from several plants including Solanaceae species. The aim of our study was to evaluate the antifungal potential of 15 vitamin D, D3 analogs, and some sterols-related compounds that have been detected in some plants along with 3 standard antifungal drugs, Isavuconazole, Fluconazole, and Voriconazole, on the Mucormycosis-sterol 14-alpha demethylase (CYP51) enzyme by in silico study. Methods In this work, the molecular simulation was used to prepare the specific enzyme and the antifungal profiles utilized for the molecular docking of the contemplated compounds and subsequent prediction for the mechanism of binding within the catalytic site of Sterol 14-Demethylase (CYP51) to speculate their binding affinities. Anti-fungal medications, Fluconazole and Voriconazole revealed drugs bound distant from the binding sites, but Isavuconazole bound close to the binding site. In this context, the 15 vitamin D and D3 compounds were somewhat seen in binding proximity, especially for Alfacalcidol, Eldecalcitol, and Inecalcitol. Results Seocalcitol and Isavuconazole had the lowest binding energies and were the closest ones connected to the binding cavities with the best binding free energies equal −13.21 ± 0.24 and −15.29 ± 0.25, respectively. Conclusion Isavuconazole and Seocalcitol could potentially be further assessed to be adjuvantly used as drugs to inhibit the fungal activity by targeting CYP51, a significant target for anti-fungal as well as anti-protozoan drugs, and hence could be efficient against mucormycosis.

Efficacy and safety of topical treatments for seborrheic keratoses: a systematic review

Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are benign epidermal neoplasms presenting as waxy, brown to black papules and plaques. Patients often seek removal for cosmetic reasons or irritation. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the efficacy and safety of topical treatments for SKs. Studies involving any topical medication indicated for SK removal were retrieved from Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane. The final search was conducted on November 9, 2021, and 26 reports met inclusion criteria. A quality rating scheme was utilized to assess evidence quality. Heterogeneity of treatments and outcome measures precluded meta-analysis. Topical treatments that yielded a good-to-excellent response include hydrogen peroxide, Maxacalcitol 25 µg/g, BID Tazarotene 0.1% cream, 5% potassium dobesilate cream, 1% diclofenac sodium solution, urea-based solution, and 65% and 80% trichloroacetic acid. Local skin reactions were often mild and transient. Topical hydrogen peroxide showed the greatest evidence for clinical clearance of SKs, although there are no studies to our knowledge that directly compared hydrogen peroxide to current first-line treatments (e.g. cryotherapy or shave excision). The results of this review suggest viable and safe treatment of SK with topical therapies; however, there remains demand for topical treatments that reliably equate or exceed the efficacy of current first-line therapies.Key PointsQuestion: Are safe and efficacious topical treatments for seborrheic keratoses available?Findings: Topical treatments for seborrheic keratoses yield different responses and may be associated with local skin reactions. Topical hydrogen peroxide shows the greatest evidence for clinical clearance of seborrheic keratoses and may be a viable option for patients requesting noninvasive removal. No studies to our knowledge directly compare hydrogen peroxide to current first-line treatments.Meaning: There remains demand for topical treatments that reliably equate or exceed the efficacy of current first-line therapies.

Transfer and Future Marketing of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism Drug “OXAROL for Injection” in Japan

TOKYO, August 28, 2024 -- Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. [Head Office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Osamu Okuda] (hereafter, Chugai) and LTL Pharma Co., Ltd. [Head Office: Tokyo, President and Representative Director: Tetsuo Ito] (hereafter, LTL Pharma) announced that both companies have reached a decision that Chugai will transfer to LTL Pharma, the business in Japan concerning the secondary hyperparathyroidism drug “OXAROL® for Injection” for which Chugai currently holds the manufacturing and marketing authorization in Japan. Chugai has been marketing OXAROL for Injection and providing information in Japan since 2000. In consideration of the maturity of its product lifecycle, Chugai has considered its future domestic marketing. As a result of discussions between Chugai and LTL Pharma, it was agreed that Chugai would transfer the assets relating to OXAROL for Injection in Japan, including manufacturing and marketing authorization, to LTL Pharma., and LTL Pharma would thereafter be responsible for sales and promotion of OXAROL for Injection.
