The goal of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility and impact of using sodium citrate nasal spray as an adjunct to olfactory retraining in participants with long-term post-COVID-19 olfactory dysfunction.
The main questions it aims to answer are:
Is sodium citrate nasal spray in addition to smell retraining feasible for participants to use in terms of participant need/desire, adherence, and adverse events?
Does sodium citrate nasal spray in addition to smell retraining further improve smell as compared to normal saline spray and smell retraining?
Participants will:
Provide consent for enrollment.
Undergo smell testing via Sniffin' Sticks.
Use a nasal spray (either sodium citrate or normal saline) followed by olfactory retraining twice a day for 12 weeks.
Return for follow-up Sniffin' Sticks testing.
Researchers will compare the sodium citrate group and the normal saline group to determine differences in smell improvement.

Sodium citrate enhancing electrodeposition of metallic arsenic from toxic trivalent arsenic and the mechanism understanding

Electrochemical conversion of hypertoxic trivalent arsenic to value-added metallic arsenic can not only contribute to pollution abatement, but also resources reutilization, therefore being widely explored. Electrochemical reduction of trivalent arsenic as a promising way is widely explored. However, the high efficiency conversion is retarded by the sluggish reduction kinetics of AsO₃^3- and fierce evolution of side products of both H₂ and toxic AsH₃. Herein, by using the sodium citrate as the additive, the current efficiency for metal arsenic production is increased greatly from 60% to 91%, with the accompanied evolution of hypertoxic AsH₃ being restrained from 0.15 Nm³/t_As to 0.022 Nm³/t_As, promising a high-efficiency and green process. The electrochemical tests and electrode surface characterizations as well as DFT calculations indicate that the added sodium citrate promotes both the diffusion of reactive AsO₃^3- towards the cathode and its subsequent adsorption on the Ti cathode, contributing to smoother reduction for generating metal arsenic, with the evolution of toxic AsH₃ being hindered at the same time. The results can provide new insights for the high-efficiency and greener conversion of hypertoxic trivalent arsenic to value-added metallic arsenic.

Suspensions of antibiotics in self-emulsifying oils as a novel approach to formulate eye drops with substances which undergo hydrolysis in aqueous environment

The aim of this study was to develop eye-drops with cefuroxime (CEF) sodium or vancomycin (VAN) hydrochloride, antibiotics that are instable in water. Anhydrous self-emulsifying oils (SEO) are proposed as a carrier and antibiotics are suspended. In the contact with tear fluid, the formulation should transform into emulsion, with fast dissolution of an antibiotic. CEF or VAN (5% w/w) was suspended in SEO carriers prepared by dissolving surfactants (Tween 20 or Span 80 5% w/w) in Miglyol, castor oil, or olive oil. Formulations with or without sodium citrate (2% w/w) were compared. Six-months or 1-year stability tests were carried out at 40 °C. The content of CEF and VAN was evaluated using HPLC and the potency of the antibiotic was assessed with agar diffusion method. In contact with water, drug particles suspended in SEO dissolved rapidly and o/w emulsion was formed. After 1-year at 40 °C, the content of degradation products was at most 0.5% in CEF and 4.0% in VAN formulations. The agar diffusion assay has shown that CEF and VAN loaded into SEO retained its potency against the sensitive microorganisms comparable to an aqueous solution. Therefore, SEO can be used as a novel carrier for the active substances which may not require improved solubility or absorption but need to be protected from moisture. This is a formulation that can be produced on industrial scale, with no limitation of stability or drug concentration.

Construction of high strength PVA/cellulose conductive hydrogels based on sodium citrate/aluminium chloride dual ions regulation

Hydrogels used for flexible sensing usually require a good balance between mechanical strength and conductivity. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose/cellulose nanofibers (PVA/CMC/CNF) hydrogels with multi-hierarchical structures were firstly prepared by adjusting the CNF content. Then, PVA/CMC/CNF-xM with excellent mechanical properties and conductivity were prepared by cyclic freezing-thawing and sodium citrate/aluminium chloride (Na₃Cit/AlCl₃) dual ions salt equilibrium methods. Results showed that at an ion concentration of 3 mol/L, PVA/CMC/CNF-3 M hydrogel exhibited a tensile strength, elongation at break and conductivity of 3.41 MPa, 1271 % and 0.35 S/m, respectively. The structural evolution of PVA/CMC/CNF-xM conductive hydrogels were studied, and the results indicated that Cit^3- formed numerous intermolecular hydrogen bonds, while Al³⁺ could strongly coordinate with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups between the polysaccharide chains. Meanwhile, PVA/CMC/CNF-3 M possessed a low strain detection limit of 1 %, making it not only can be used for human motion monitoring, but also information encoding and transmission. This work may provide a facile approach for preparing high-strength and conductive hydrogels, which can be applied in flexible wearable electronic devices and information transmission.
