Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is one of the B vitamins. It is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Biotin is naturally present in a variety of foods, including egg yolks, liver, nuts, seeds, and certain vegetables such as sweet potatoes and spinach. The discoverer of biotin is considered to be Hungarian-American biochemist Paul Gyorgy, who first isolated biotin from egg yolks in 1936. Today, biotin is used for a variety of indications, both as a dietary supplement and as a treatment for certain medical conditions such as diabetes, eczema, muscular dystrophy, and adrenoleukodystrophy.
