Mechanistic insights into the viral microorganism inactivation during lime stabilization for wastewater sludges

The pathogens inactivation in wastewater sludges is vitally important for safely managing solid wastes and protecting public and environmental health especially in the emergency. Reports have shown the effectiveness of lime to kill virus pathogens in sludges, but mechanism of virus inactivation and related human diseases is unclear. This study evaluated representative limes of CaO/CaO₂ on actual viral microorganism inactivation by viral metagenomic sequencing technology. As results, the CaO₂ treatment enhanced the sludge hydrolysis and enveloped viral pathogens suppression via EPS structure destruction by oxidative radical generations; while CaO suppressed most of none-enveloped plant related viral pathogens. Most of the viromes of plant virus including Virgaviridae and Nodaviridae were inactivated by CaO, but the human virus-Feirsviridae and plant virus-Solemoviridae were occurred after lime stabilization compared to untreated sludge, with abundances of 1 %-37 % and 21 %-32 % in CaO-treated (CaO-T) and CaO₂-treated (CaO₂-T) samples, respectively. In addition, metatranscriptome analysis revealed distinct gene expression patterns between the CaO-T and CaO₂-T sludges, in which lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis (LPS) and aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) in CaO-T, the formation of ribosome in CaO₂-T were crucial to RNA virus regrowth in sludge. These findings suggested neither of CaO and CaO₂ could completely suppress pathogens in sludge, and the effect of representative limes of CaO and CaO₂ on the viral pathogen diversity, abundance, and metabolic function of the core microbiome on virus suppression and regrowth were ignored. Therefore, combined processes were recommended to provide possible alternatives for sludge safe management in pandemic emergencies.

Assessment of poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) and lime for surface water treatment (pond, river, and canal water): seasonal variations and correlation analyses

The present study deals with the assessment of different physicochemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity (E.C.), turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and dissolved oxygen) in different surface water such as pond, river, and canal water in four different seasons, viz. March, June, September, and December 2023. The research endeavors to assess the impact of a cationic polyelectrolyte, specifically poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC), utilized as a coagulation aid in conjunction with lime for water treatment. Employing a conventional jar test apparatus, turbidity removal from diverse water samples is examined. Furthermore, the samples undergo characterization utilizing X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The study also conducts correlation analyses on various parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity of raw water, polyelectrolyte dosage, and percentage of turbidity removal across different water sources. Utilizing the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software, these analyses aim to establish robust relationships among initial turbidity, temperature, percentage of turbidity removal, dosage of coagulant aid, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids (TDS) in pond water, river water, and canal water. A strong positive correlation could be found between the percentage of turbidity removal and the value of initial turbidity of all surface water. However, a negative correlation could be observed between the polyelectrolyte dosage and raw water's turbidity. By elucidating these correlations, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the effectiveness of PDADMAC and lime in water treatment processes across diverse environmental conditions. This research enhances our comprehension of surface water treatment methodologies and provides valuable insights for optimizing water treatment strategies to address the challenges posed by varying water sources and seasonal fluctuations.

Calcium Acetate Drug Produced from Rapana venosa Invasive Gastropod Shells: Green Process Control Assisted by Raman Technology

The highly demanded calcium acetate (Ca(CH₃COO)₂) for biomedicine and various industries constantly requires green and low-cost methods of synthesis. In the present work, a sustainable approach to produce Ca(CH₃COO)₂ is reported as a proof of concept, processing for the first time as a starting material the worldwide highly abundant Rapana venosa shells, which is a neglected biogenic waste with high economical potential due to the rich mineral and organic pigmentary content. A green synthesis involving an eco-friendly acetic acid has been optimized at room temperature, without any additional energy consumption, and the resulting saturated Ca(CH₃COO)₂ solution was further slowly evaporated in three stages to obtain white Ca(CH₃COO)₂ crystalline powder, without impurity traces. Raman spectroscopy provided efficient structural information for every step of the process control, during demineralization as well as end product validation. Yields as high as 87.5% of highly pure Ca(CH₃COO)₂ mass have been achieved from raw R. venosa shells, proving the uniqueness and economic viability of the method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and Fourier-Transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses validated the final product identity, hydration status, crystalline morphology, and composition. The purity of the resulting product suggests a high valorization potential of the abundant R. venosa shell in the context of the blue bioeconomy and offers a cleaner and efficient method of Ca(CH₃COO)₂ production with important applications in relevant industries.
