This year's first place prize was awarded to Hassanain Qambari, assisted by Jayden Dickson of the Lions Eye Institute, for his vivid image of a rodent optic nerve head showing astrocytes (yellow), contractile proteins (red), and retinal vasculature (green). The damaged blood vessels can swell and leak, which can cause blurry vision or total loss of eyesight. Since 2021, Qambari has devoted his time and research to the early detection and reversal of the disease. "Current diagnostic criteria and treatment regimens for diabetic retinopathy are limited to the late-stage appearance of the disease, with irreversible damage to retinal microvasculature and function," said Qambari. "The visual system is a complex and highly specialized organ, with even relatively minor perturbations to the retinal circulation able to cause devastating vision loss. I entered the competition as a way to showcase the complexity of retinal microcirculation." Qambari faced some challenges when capturing his image such as locating fine vessels near 110 microns in diameter and establishing a protocol for labeling different cell types. "Over the past 20 years, our research group has refined the technique of isolated ocular perfusion labeling for fine vessels in the eye," said Qambari. "While the ophthalmic artery in the rodent model presented a technically demanding challenge, we were able to overcome it with persistence and patience." The final result educates the public about the universal condition affecting millions and the vital research necessary to further advance care. "The Nikon Small World competition is great, as it showcases amazing work across many disciplines from around the world," said Qambari. "All the images presented in the competition represent the beauty and artistic side of science which may otherwise get overlooked. Such a competition not only celebrates the participant's hard work and passion but may also draw and inspire young scientists to pursue a career in STEM. It certainly inspired me." Second place was awarded to Ole Bielfeldt for his image of a matchstick igniting by the friction surface of the box. The image was taken within one eight-thousands of a second and utilized imaging stacking. Third place was awarded to Malgorzata Lisowska for her image of breast cancer cells. In addition to the top three winners, Nikon Small World recognized 83 photos out of thousands of entries from scientists and artists across the globe. To monitor the variety of physiological parameters needed to undertake such an evaluation, they turned to the multi-modal Masimo Root® patient monitoring and connectivity platform, which is designed to allow clinicians to streamline their ability to keep track of numerous modalities, simultaneously, using a single, intuitive monitor. View the full release here: Masimo Root® (Graphic: Business Wire) Noting the increased risk of hypoxemia during one-lung ventilation (OLV) as part of VATS, which can lead to postoperative neurocognitive dysfunctions, the authors hypothesized that increasing EtCO2 could be a “convenient and powerful” way to manage cerebral desaturation during the surgery. They enrolled 70 patients, ages 18-65, undergoing elective VATS requiring OLV, between September 2021 and September 2022 at The King Fahd General Hospital, Jeddah. All patients were operated on by the same surgical team. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: in the first, EtCO2 was maintained at 32-38 mmHg (group I) and in the second, at 39-45 mmHg (group II). During the procedure, monitored parameters included oxygen saturation (Masimo SET® SpO2), heart rate (HR), and noninvasive hemoglobin (Masimo SpHb®) via an RD rainbow SET® fingertip sensor; EtCO2 via capnometer and NomoLine sampling line; noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP), body temperature, and rSO2 via O3 near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sensors monitoring both brain hemispheres; and Masimo Patient State Index (PSi™), a processed EEG parameter used to help clinicians maintain appropriate sedation, via SedLine. Outcomes included Aldrete scores and MMSE scores assessed at 3 and 24 hours after surgery. The researchers found that the percentage of change in rSO2 differed significantly between groups (p < 0.05), on both sides of the brain, with the higher values, over time, in Group II, in direct relation with the higher EtCO2 maintained in that group. In the right hemisphere, the difference became significant at the fourth time interval [T4] at which rSO2 was recorded, p = 0.0012, and maintained significance for the remainder of surgery [T4-T13], p < 0.001. In the left hemisphere, the difference became significant at T2, p = 0.09, and remained significant [T3-13], p < 0.001. Aldrete scores were significantly higher in Group II upon arrival at the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) (p = 0.013) and 15 minutes after arrival (p = 0.03), then became comparable. MMSE scores were significantly higher in Group II 3 hours after surgery (p = 0.0009), but not at 24 hours after surgery. Insecticides containing flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor can have devastating effects on honey bee health. The substances damage the insects' intestinal flora, especially when used in conjunction with a common fungicide, making them more susceptible to disease and shortening their life span. The two insecticides were considered harmless to bees and bumblebees when approved, but their use has since been severely restricted. Insecticides containing flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor can have devastating effects on honey bee health. The substances damage the insects' intestinal flora, especially when used in conjunction with a common fungicide, making them more susceptible to disease and shortening their life span. This was recently demonstrated in a study conducted at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), as published in Science of the Total Environment. The two insecticides were considered harmless to bees and bumblebees when approved, but their use has since been severely restricted. For the study, honey bees that were free from environmental influences were first bred in the laboratory. "We wanted to control every aspect of the bees' lives -- from their diet to their exposure to pathogens or pesticides," says Dr Yahya Al Naggar, the biologist who led the project at MLU and who now works at Tanta University in Egypt. In the first few days, all bees were given the same food: sugar syrup. They were then divided into several groups and various pesticides were added to their food. One group was given flupyradifurone, while another was given sulfoxaflor. Both substances are approved insecticides in Germany, but their use is now limited to greenhouses. As pesticides are often used as a mixture, the scientists also took this into account in their laboratory experiment by enriching the food administered to two other groups not only with the insecticides mentioned, but also with azoxystrobin, which has been used to protect plants from harmful fungi for many decades. The concentration of the substances was well below the legal requirements in each case. "Our approach was based on the realistic concentrations that might be found in pollen and nectar from plants that have been treated with the pesticides," says Al Naggar. A control group continued to receive the normal sugar syrup without additives. Over a period of ten days, the team observed whether the substances had any effects on the bees and, if so, what. They found that the pesticides are anything but harmless: Around half of all bees whose diet had been supplemented with flupyradifurone died during the study -- and even more when combined with azoxystrobin. While sulfoxaflor produced similar effects, more insects survived the diet. The scientists also analysed the bees' intestinal flora, i.e. the bacteria and fungi living in their digestive tract. "The fungicide azoxystrobin led to a significant reduction in naturally occurring fungi. That was to be expected, as fungicides are used to control fungi," says Dr Tesfaye Wubet from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), who is also a member of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. Over the course of the ten-day study, however, the team was able to show that the mixture of fungi and bacteria detected in the insects differed greatly from the control group depending on the substances used. According to the researchers, the bacterium Serratia marcescens was able to spread alarmingly well in the digestive tract of the treated insects. "These bacteria are pathogenic and harmful to bees' health. They can make it harder for the insects to fight off infection, leading to premature death," explains Al Naggar. As the study was conducted in a laboratory in Halle to exclude the number of external influences, it is unclear whether the same results can be found in nature. "The effects of the pesticides could well be even more dramatic -- or the bees might be able to fully or at least partially compensate for the negative effects," concludes Wubet. With this in mind, the team calls for the potential effects of new pesticides on beneficial insects to be researched more rigorously before they are approved and for their effects on aspects such as intestinal flora to be included as standard in the risk assessment.
