Characteristics and functional bacteria of an efficient benzocaine-mineralizing bacterial consortium

The extensive use of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) has led to widespread residual pollution, which increases the risk of the development of drug resistance in pathogenic microorganisms. Benzocaine is a PPCP that is widely used medical anesthesia and in sunscreen. Microorganisms are essential for the degradation of residual PPCPs. However, no studies have reported the microbial degradation of benzocaine. In this study, through continuous enrichment of the initial consortium HJ1, the highly efficient benzocaine-degrading consortium HJ7 was obtained, HJ7 exhibited a degradation rate that was 1.92 times greater than that of HJ1. Methyl 4-aminobenzoate and 4-aminobenzoic acid were identified as major intermediate products during benzocaine biodegradation by consortium HJ1 or HJ7. Methylobacillus (57.8 % ± 0.9 %) and Pseudomonas (22.1 % ± 0.7 %), which are thought to harbor essential species for benzocaine degradation, were significantly enriched in consortium HJ7. Two benzocaine-degrading strains, Pseudomonas sp. A8 and Microbacterium sp. A741, and one methyl 4-aminobenzoate-degrading strain, Achromobacter sp. A5, were isolated from consortium HJ7, and they synergistically mineralized benzocaine. These findings not only provide new insights into the biotransformation of benzocaine but also provide strain resources for the bioremediation of residual benzocaine in the environment.

Seasonal dynamics of bacterial composition and functions in biological treatment of coking wastewater.

Seasonal dynamics of bacterial composition and functions were demonstrated for the biological fluidized-bed bioreactors combined in the anoxic/aerobic1/aerobic2 (AOO) coking wastewater (CWW) treatment sequences. The bacterial composition and functions in the CWW activated sludge samples were revealed by 16S rRNA genes amplicon sequencing. Thiobacillus, Cloacibacterium, Alkaliphilus and Pseudomonas were determined as core genera with seasonal changes. Mutable microbial community composition fluctuated in different seasons in same bioreactor. Distributions of predicted KEGG pathways along four seasons consistently demonstrated enrichment in biodegradation of carbon- and nitrogen-containing compounds. The major contaminants were removed from CWW by biochemical pathway of xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism. This Level 2 pathway mainly owned the Level 3 pathways of benzoate degradation, drug metabolism-other enzymes, drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, and aminobenzoate degradation. The RDA results showed that dissolved oxygen with seasonal fluctuation was the main parameter shaping the microbial community. The observed dynamics within the microbial community composition, coupled with the maintained stability of CWW treatment efficiencies and a consistent profile of microbial functional pathways, underscore the presence of functional redundancy in the AOO bioreactors. The study underscored stable and effective operational performances of bioreactors in the AOO sequences, contributing the knowledge of microbiological basics to the advancement of CWW biological treatment. Current development of inverted p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PSCs), with nickel oxide as the hole transport layer, is progressing toward lower net costs, higher efficiencies, and superior stabilities. Unfortunately, the high density of defect-based traps on the surface of perovskite films significantly limits the photoelectric conversion efficiency and operational stability of perovskite solar cells. Finding cost-effective interface modifiers is crucial for the further commercial development of p-i-n PSCs. In the present work, we report a passivation strategy using a multifunctional molecule, benzocaine hydrochloride (BHC), which is shown to reduce defect density and enhance the photovoltaic performance and stability of the resultant p-i-n PSCs. It has been revealed that BHC strongly interacts with perovskite precursor components and triggers the evolution of the perovskite absorber film morphology and enables improved surface energy level alignment, thus promoting charge carrier transport and extraction. These properties are beneficial for improving open-circuit voltage (V_OC) and fill factor (FF). Our results show that the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of p-i-n PSCs with nickel oxide as the hole transport layer increased from an initial 20.0% to 22.1% after being passivated with BHC, and these passivated devices also exhibited improved stability. DFT calculations reveal the unusual ability of the BHC passivant to improve band alignment while also preventing the accumulation of holes at the interface. In this work, the advantages of BHC passivation are demonstrated by linking theoretical calculations with optical and electrical characterizations.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y., Dec. 22, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Insight Pharmaceuticals, a Prestige Consumer Healthcare Inc. company (“Insight”), is voluntarily recalling one lot of Americaine® 20% Benzocaine Topical Anesthetic Spray to the consumer level. While benzene is not an ingredient in any Americaine® 20% Benzocaine Topical Anesthetic Spray products, a recent review by our manufacturer and their third-party lab found that a sample from one lot of the product showed a low level of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can. Importantly, no other lots of Americaine® 20% Benzocaine Topical Anesthetic Spray (either before or after this batch code) are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended. Risk Statement: Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it potentially can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening. Insight is recalling these products out of an abundance of caution. To date, the Company has not received any serious adverse events related to this recall. Benzene is ubiquitous in the environment. AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DERMATOLOGY URGES AMERICANS TO USE SUN PROTECTION AHEAD OF JULY 4th WEEKEND

Board-certified dermatologist provides tips to relieve discomfort from sunburns ROSEMONT, Ill., June 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The July 4th weekend is a time when many Americans will celebrate outdoors at parades, pools and cookouts, but without proper sun protection, they put themselves and their children at risk of getting sunburned, which increases the chances of developing skin cancer. A recent American Academy of Dermatology survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults revealed that one-third of American parents reported having a child who was sunburned in 2022. Sunburn, which is the result of skin receiving too much exposure from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays, can cause long-lasting damage to the skin. "The survey data is troubling because blistering sunburns and childhood sunburns greatly increase your risk of getting skin cancer, including melanoma, the most serious form," said board-certified dermatologist A. Yasmine Kirkorian, MD, FAAD, chief of dermatology at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. "To some extent, I think parents are aware of the need for sun protection, but at the same time are falling short of adequately protecting their children." People can avoid sunburn by seeking shade, remembering that the sun's rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., she said. Additionally, people should wear a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection, when possible. The third component of sun protection is applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all skin not covered by clothing and reapplying every two hours or after swimming or sweating, said Dr. Kirkorian. "I tell parents to make sure that their children are willing to apply sunscreen themselves," said Dr. Kirkorian. "For their faces in particular, it's often best to try a stick sunscreen because it's easier to apply. I also recommend that they tell their children to go inside to rest during the times of the day when the sun is the strongest." If you get a sunburn, it is important to begin treating it as soon as possible, so the best thing to do is get out of the sun and go indoors, she said. Dr. Kirkorian and the AAD recommend the following tips to help relieve discomfort from a sunburn: Take frequent cool baths or showers to help relieve the pain. As soon as you get out of the bathtub or shower, gently pat yourself dry, but leave a little water on your skin. Then, apply a moisturizer to help trap the water in your skin. This can help ease the dryness. Use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburned skin. If a particular area feels especially uncomfortable, you may want to apply a hydrocortisone cream that you can buy without a prescription. Do not treat sunburn with "-caine" products (such as benzocaine), as these may irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction. Consider taking aspirin or ibuprofen to help reduce any swelling, redness and discomfort. Drink extra water. A sunburn draws fluid to the skin's surface and away from the rest of the body. Drinking extra water when you are sunburned helps prevent dehydration. If your skin blisters, allow the blisters to heal. Blistering skin means you have a second-degree sunburn. You should not pop the blisters, as blisters form to help your skin heal and protect you from infection. Take extra care to protect sunburned skin while it heals. Wear clothing that covers your skin when outdoors. Tightly-woven fabrics work best. When you hold the fabric up to a bright light, you shouldn't see any light coming through. "If your skin starts to blister and you feel unwell from the blisters or heat exhaustion, then you should seek care from an emergency room," said Dr. Kirkorian. "Similarly, if the blisters are very large, you'll want to seek medical care.
